This is a very common theme in fiction. The idea of an angel falling from heaven is also common, however the more common version of this story is someone who dies and goes to Heaven, rather than one who shoots herself in the head.

Although Mia Miller was fictional, the author did use her as inspiration for his main character "Jack Miller". Jack had to attend his sister's funeral after Mia killed herself after they got into a fight over Jack's drinking. After her death, Mia's body was cremated and dumped on Alcatraz Island.

The island is now named Miller Island after her.
